Virtual Exchange

At the beginning of this year, TINFA launched the virtual exchange program. Classrooms in Guatemala, and classrooms in Seattle (grades 3rd to 6th) embarked on a 6 month long partnership that aims to practice collaborative learning and bridging of cultures; an exciting opportunity for children on both side to develop as global citizens and practice their 21st century skills.

Teachers in Seattle and Guatemala agreed on three themes, in TINFA's proposed curriculum, for the students to study, explore similarities and differences, analyze and share perspective. So far students have had the opportunity to interact by presenting and interviewing  each other about their favorite activities, rules of their classroom, opinions on nutrition, views on landscapes and vision on how to take care of our natural resources. This month, several will tackle traditions and cultures, as well as nutrition and non processed food we can find in our plate.

So far, the virtual exchange program has been a success. Students and teachers alike look forward to the Skype conversations. They team work, get the opportunity to practice public speaking as they present facts and opinions to their counterparts. They are exposed to a different language and learn from each others' world view in each meeting. In  line with TINFA's values, teachers use technology as a tool to educate, learn, and practice 21st century skills. The virtual exchange program embodies our vision; by bridging cultures and learning collaboratively, students are able to discover and expand their dreams.
