The President of the country, Otto Pérez Molina, was forced to resign, succumbing to the pressure of the people. He is accused of fraud and corruption charges. Although Guatemala has suffered 30 years of civil war (hundreds of thousand people were killed in the 70s and 80s!), people from all backgrounds and opposite political lines demonstrated together this time, to force, first, the vice president, then, the president to step down. No major violence erupted. Transparency and accountability is winning.

Presidential elections are taking place (final round on Oct. 25th) and politicians have taken notice. Corruption at the highest level can be uncovered and punished. Watch out!

Although Guatemala suffers from some of the deepest problems (one of the highest rate of malnutrition in the world, and huge inequalities), it is one of the strongest economies of Central America. Imagine the potential, once the money trickles down into the education system, and successful projects like TINFA's get replicated on large scales. It will take time, but it is going in the right direction! Go Guatemala!
